I would like to provide a file attachment to my auto response, so that when a person signs up for my mailing list they would automatically receive a free ebook from me with the auto response. Is this possible?

Unfortunately, the attachment is not possible. I would recommend hosting the ebook somewhere and simply providing a link to it.
